Pora, Svoboda Vybory Stormed by Gov't Forces

The Ukrainian pro-democracy organizations Pora, Svoboda Vybory, Znayu are under seige by Ukrainian Ministry of the Interior Troops, Berkut. The provocations against Pora have been intensifying in the last several weeks. Viktor Yuschenko stated today that the militia is planning a terrorist act and then blaming it on student groups, Pora or other similar organizations. He continued that they (Nasha Ukraina) have information that Interior Ministry troops are being ordered to and quartered in and around Kyiv under the pretext of the military parade which is to occur on October 28.

THE POLICE IS ATTACKING PORA AGAIN!!!!!

The searches by SBU (SECURITY SERVICE) staff are being conducted now, at 10:35 October 22, 2004 in the office of the Secretariat of the Freedom of Choice Coalition of Ukrainian NGOs in Kyiv that implements a range of monitoring and educational projects towards ensuring democratic electoral process in Ukraine. SBU claims they have a sanction for the search of campaign PORA office under the signature of major Yuri Primak. But the search of Freedom of Choice office is totally illegal. MP Yurii Pavlenko and a couple of journalists are right now dealing with the police.

The MPs and mass media are not allowed to enter the building. No infornation is provided. The police is conducting searches in the apartment of Vlad Kaskiv Coordinator of Freedom of Choice Coalition. The MPs and OSCE representatives are there. Also searches are being carried out in the private apartments ofYury Poliuchovich amd Mykhailo Svystovich, activists the civic campaign PORA, which has been vigorously cracked down by law-enforcement bodies. The reaction political forces in Ukraine have launched the large-scale attack over democracy and human rights.

Ukrainian Intelligentsia Appeal to Citizens of Ukraine

The Ukrainian Intelligentsia issued the following statement on the eve of the Ukrainian Presidential Elections. It calls on the citizens of Ukraine to actively support Viktor Yuschenko's bid for the presidency not only because the people of Ukraine are continuing to live in poverty and that cultural life is 'unnecessary' in this state; but because, what is far worse, they write, is that recently, "the souls of the people are once again filled with the same fear" that they believed was overcome thirteen years before.

They further state that regardless of one's political preferences, the only hope that remains for Ukraine is to rally around Yuschenko. They end the statement confident in the democratic, European future of Ukraine.They state, however, that a European future can only be achieved if the nation makes a conscious choice on October 31.

The appeal is signed by well known and respected writers, poets, actors, musicians, historians, philosophers.

Звернення представників творчої інтелігенції України до громадян України

Шановні співвітчизники!

Більшість із нас далекі від політики. Але сьогодні, коли на багато років уперед вирішується доля України, ми не можемо й не маємо права мовчати.

Ще не так давно ми були певні: незалежність України означатиме не лише добробут її громадян, а й культурний розквіт, формування суспільства по-справжньому вільних, духовно багатих людей, господарів на своїй землі. На жаль, дійсність не справдила цих сподівань.

Йдеться не тільки про те, що переважна більшість українців досі живе в бідності й безправї. І не лише про те, що українська література, театр, кіно, музичне виконавство виявилися непотрібними державі, владці якої є в суті своїй людьми низької культури.

Значно гірше, що від певного часу в душі людей став знову заповзати страх - той самий страх, якого ми начебто позбулися 13 років тому. Сьогодні ми дедалі частіше боїмося вільно говорити, щоб не втратити останнього, що маємо, - роботи й шматка хліба. А замість затишного європейського дому з його заможним життям і повагою до закону знов пропонують євразійські простори і навислий над ними грізний привид деспотії й варварства.

Стає очевидним: дорога, якою вело нас дотеперішнє керівництво держави, - це дорога в глухий кут, у минуле в його найбрутальніших формах. Тому ми прагнемо змін і віримо, що вибори 31 жовтня принесуть нам ці зміни. Тому ми рішуче не приймаємо Віктора Януковича - кандидата від чинної влади, який обіцяє нам 'спадковість курсу', а отже - дальший розквіт безкарного чиновницького свавілля, духовний та моральний занепад нації.

Під загрозою тисячолітня культура великого європейського народу, який віками боровся за свою свободу, пережив війни, голодомори та масові репресії - і зумів подарувати людству Олександра Довженка і Леся Курбаса, Максима Березовського і Миколу Лисенка, Олександра Архипенка і Казимира Малевича, Соломію Крушельницьку й Івана Франка, Тараса Шевченка і Лесю Українку. Сьогодні випадкова корумпована верхівка знову хоче повернути нас назад у рабство, відібравши мову і душу, пам'ять і гідність.

Україні загрожує перетворення на одну з жалюгідних диктатур 'третього світу' - безликий ринок дешевої робочої сили і гарматного м'яса для вжитку злочинних владців.

Бажаючи добра й гідного життя собі, своїм дітям та онукам, ми повинні, незважаючи на свої політичні уподобання, згуртуватися навколо Віктора Ющенка, - єдиного кандидата, який сьогодні має шанс перемогти представника кримінальної влади.

Ми віримо в демократичне, європейське майбутнє України. Але вибороти його можемо лишень своєю свідомою позицією на виборах 31 жовтня.

Усіх діячів культури, хто поділяє нашу позицію, закликаємо поставити свої підписи під цим зверненням.

MFA Wants 400 Additional Polling Stations in Russia!

According to Interfax Ukraine, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has proposed that the Ukrainian Central Election Committee (CEC) form 400 additional polling stations in Russia. Citing Yuriy Danelevsky, a member of the CEC, IU reports that the CEC is considering this proposal. Danelevsky further stated that "no doubt, the number of registered voters in Russia will also rise."

This clearly goes hand in hand with the Kremlin's other efforts on behalf of Yanukovych. (See Yanukovych Billboards in Moscow)

Zerkalo Tyzhnnya also reports that they have:

"learned, however, from a member of the Central Election Commission that the hopes of opposition candidates to appoint their delegates to election commissions at the additional polling stations (should these be set up) are absolutely in vain. According to the CEC recommendation, the commissions at the extraordinary polling stations abroad are appointed based on the Foreign Ministry’s proposition. No candidates’ representatives are specified. "

Furthermore, dispensing international observers to all of these new polling places is virtually impossible. And without representatives of the candidates in place at the stations, observers are critical.

Repeat after me: "Election Fraud. Election Fraud. Election Fraud."

Yanukovych Billboards in Moscow

Naturally, Yanukovych is Moscow's choice in Ukraine's upcoming Presidential election. But Putin had to make it even more obvious than putting on a circus of a show of support for him by holding a "congress" of a non-existent organization of Ukrainians in Russia which backed Yanukovych's bid. That the organization of Ukrainians in Russia supports Yanukovych was news to the chair of the viable, active Ukrainian organization, Rudenko-Desniak. What's even more interesting is that Yanukovych's "Ukrainians in Russia" were organized by one Oleg Baklanov. Baklanov oversaw the Soviet military-industrial complex from his post on the Soviet Defense Council, was a member of the powerful Central Committee and was a putsch organizer.

Certainly, it wasn't enough for the Kremlin to gather signatures in Russia to put Yanukovych on the ballot in Ukraine. According to Yuschenko's people, there were more signatures than eligible voters in Russia.

Now there are billboards in Moscow urging Ukrainians to vote for Yanukovych. Which is curious because there are probably only about 4000 eligible Ukrainian voters in the region around Moscow. Certainly far fewer than, say, in Seattle or Rome.

So, are those few votes worth the expenditure of placing the billboards or is there another reason? Of course there's another reason. The Moscow Times reports that former Kremlin political consultant Sergei Markov said that the goal of the billboard is "to underline that Russia backs Yanukovych." The MT also quotes Igor Mintusov, chairman of the political consulting agency Nikkolo M: "The presidential administration is just telling people that it supports Yanukovych." The billboards "are not intended to attract voters," he added.

There is an implicit threat when Moscow makes clear what Moscow wants. Moscow gets what it wants... or else.
